Our Winners

What inspired you to write your song?

I’ve seen friends being bullied, which led to their depression and low self-esteem, and I’ve seen my family, at times, down and depressed, including myself, again leading to no confidence and low self-esteem. I wanted to express that no matter what people say about you, mistakes people made in the past, or any regret people have, although it can be a struggle, believe in yourself and move forward with life having confidence, because you are beautiful and worthy no matter what! All that matters is ‘you’, and ‘you are priceless’!
— Jessa Pontier (18) - "Confident"

What advice do you have for aspiring songwriters/musicians?

You must find what is essential and unique to YOU. Where do your strengths and weaknesses lie. I like to think that sometimes our limitations become our signature strengths. You have to keep chipping away to find that singular voice. We all start out as imitators of what we are drawn to. What’s exciting is when a new identity gathers all those influences and blooms in its own right.
— Jonatha Brooke - Singer/Songwriter
Seek out inspiring musicians that can be your mentors. Every great musician has
inherited techniques and inspiration from their predecessors. It’s important to discover
the artists that you connect with - then incorporate their work into your work.
